When Allan Shaw was there in 1957, Manchester Airport - Ringway, as it was called then - mainly catered for domestic traffic - 70%. As wll as a 'feeder' service to LAP, it also catered for some international traffic - 30% - Amsterdam, Dublin, Paris and other near-continental cities.
Allan Shaw was stationed at Manchester Docks in the mid 1950s and recalls they covered the Manchester Ship Canal from Latchford Locks at Warrington to Selford. The Ellismere Port and Liverpool rummage crews covered the canal from Stenlow to the Latchford Locks.
Vessels arrived from the Eastern seaboard of the USA, India, Dublin, Scandinavia and Canada. Some belonging to Bowater, Manchester Liners, Lykes Line and the Harrison Line. Cargos included iron oar at the Lancashire wharf, timber, general cargo and Guiness.
