The Waterguard Team - 1971 Against Amsterdam Customs
On 5 November 1971, a combined Customs team from Immingham & Hull journeyed to Amsterdam, where they defeated the Coenhaven Section of the Amsterdam Customs who were Immingham's opposite numbers on the Tor Line passenger service between the two ports. The Customs party, which included wives, were made very welcome by the Dutch team and the game was played on an oil company's ground in Amsterdam with floodlights and a small grandstand - a little different to the local park pitches we were used to when playing teams from ships crews! The Dutch took the lead before John Allingham scored 4 goals and Mike Hall scored a further 2, helping the UK party become the 6 - 1 winners. Dave Bennison, lmmingham captain (second from left) tosses up with the Dutch captain. |
