The Isle of Man was part of the Liverpool District and during the summer months there was a day trip ferry service for holiday makers from Douglas, IOM, to Dublin and return. Rummage crews went over from Liverpool to the Isle of Man for a week at a time to clear the passengers and their baggage on return from Dublin. The whole operation took about one hour, leaving the lucky rummage crews plenty of spare time for other pastimes . . . . .

Blackgang is a village on the south west coast of the Isle of Wight with a 'chine' leading down to the beach. It was a smugglers haunt during the 17th and 18th centurys.

Rummage crews were christened 'The Blackgang' by ships crews because they did not wear white covers on their uniform caps in the summer.
