Waterguard Staff - circa 1964

APO's on D/D from Southampton. Graham managed to get the car into a river when boarding a yacht at nearby Christchurch - forgot the handbrake - the car stank for weeks afterwards!

NB. 'The office was closed in about 1980 and sold into private hands. When Geoff and I were photographed, we were the two APO’s in the local rummage crew. The staff at Portland then were a PO and an APO on a day watch (8-4pm or 9-5pm) and a PO and an APO on an  evening watch (2pm-10pm). The evening watch pair reported at Weymouth for baggage in the afternoon, and went over to Portland after the meal break. In 1970 the staff was reduced to one PO on 9-5pm, and he shared the ground floor with two draughtsmen from the D of E. In 1980 the office was closed altogether.  It is worth noting that the staff covering Portland were part of the Weymouth Roster in use at the time.' - Brian Searle

'I remember Ron so well and I felt privileged to be one of his friends. We both hail from Plymouth where there were two boys' Grammar Schools in the good old days.  Ron went to Devonport High School and I attended Sutton High School, but we never met until we both served at Manston in the summer of 1966, where Ron's infectious laugh could be heard right across the airfield.  We kept in touch, and met again when Ron came to Gatwick for a spell as relief CPO in about 1971.  Ron was involved in all sorts of departmental "things", including a spell in the British Virgin Islands, and running the local Investigation Unit in Leeds, where he had settled. His final job was as Chief Welfare Officer, and when he finally retired, he visited various Welfare Offices throughout the land, and when he came to the southern area, John Avery, who was the local Welfare Officer, organised a dinner for him in a hotel in Bournemouth, and seated my wife and I together Ron and his good lady, a great honour for us.' - Brian Searle
