GE Thompson APO & J Thomas PO - 1958

In December 1957 they made brave, though unsuccessful, efforts to rescue Gilbert Hornby from the River Mersey. They were both awarded British Empire Medals by the Queen, which were presented by the then Chancellor of the Exchequer at Liverpool Custom House on 28 February 1958.

The citation declared that Her Majesty was pleased to make these awards in recognition of  'without thought of their own safety both had made valiant attempts to effect a rescue.'

Liverpool APOs at an 'Olde English Night' - c1969/1970

The event was at Ruthin Castle, North Wales. The guests were given daggers, half a chicken each and a glass of mead - a foul-tasting sweet concoction, which once tried, was never to be repeated - note the bibs they were required to wear!

The APOs from left to right are Brian Godfrey, Derek Atherton, Dave I’Anson, John Lamb (obscured) & and Tony Coady. The ladies opposite are wives and girl-friends, those in the foreground being assorted fans and hangers-on!
