With Maurice Stott PO, he saved the life of a 6 year old boy who had fallen into the River Tyne while gathering driftwood, and possibly that of a youth of 16 years who had gone to the aid of the boy.

The boy had been unconscious for some time before he was hauled aboard HMCL Eider by Maurice Stott PO where artificial respiration was initiated by JT Kilgour APO.
